Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer Care in Hampton Roads & Eastern North Carolina

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men, with approximately 1 in 8 men receiving a diagnosis in their lifetime. Fortunately, prostate cancer is most often slow-growing and highly treatable. The long-term survival rate is high when the cancer is diagnosed early.

At Virginia Oncology Associates (VOA), our oncologists provide patient-centered care and access to the latest prostate cancer treatments, including clinical trials. We have locations throughout Virginia and Eastern North Carolina, including Chesapeake, Elizabeth City, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg.

Explore the following sections to learn more about how prostate cancer is detected and treated so you can make informed decisions about your care.

Just Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer?

If you were recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, we encourage you to meet with an oncologist to discuss your treatment options. The cancer care team at VOA is here to guide newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients through their cancer journey. From starting with a comprehensive consultation to creating a treatment plan and explaining what to expect after prostate cancer treatment, we are here to guide you every step of the way.

Prostate Cancer Staging

The stage of prostate cancer will influence when you need treatment and which treatment options will be most effective. The prostate cancer doctor will assess the location and size of the tumor, along with the Gleason Score and PSA test results, to determine the stage of cancer. Your risk group will also be determined, indicating the likelihood of localized cancer spreading outside the prostate.

Treatment Options for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer does not always require surgery or an immediate treatment plan. Your prostate cancer specialist at Virginia Oncology Associates will review your test results and talk about whether you can use an active surveillance approach or if they feel it is time to start treatment. Based on your cancer stage and overall health, we will work together to develop a prostate cancer treatment plan that’s best for you.

Prostate Cancer Research and Clinical Trials in Virginia

At Virginia Oncology Associates, we are fortunate to collaborate with the Duke University Oncology Consortium, the National Cancer Institute, the US Oncology Network, the Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI), and other major cancer centers. VOA has over 70 ongoing clinical trials for cancer, giving patients access to new therapies. Through these partnerships, we provide our community in Hampton Roads, Eastern North Carolina, and the surrounding areas with the most advanced treatment technologies.
